DRUM - Desis Rising Up & Moving

DRUM's Leadership Welcomes Fahd Ahmed as Executive Director

This Spring, DRUM's board of directors, staff, and member leaders named Fahd Ahmed DRUM's Executive Director. As Chair of the board, I am thrilled to share this announcement with you, building on the momentum of a very exciting year for DRUM.

In naming Fahd as DRUM's Executive Director, the board and DRUM's Organizational Transformation Team (OTT) used feedback and evaluations received by DRUM's leaders, members, staff, board, partners and allies to inform the unanimous decision. Fahd served as the Acting Director of DRUM beginning in June 2014. During this time, Fahd has brought energy and innovative ideas and has led the collective leadership and staff in implementing program work to strengthen and grow DRUM while broadening relationships with allies. We look forward to his leadership in this next stage of DRUM.

The decision to name Fahd as Executive Director was supported by funders, allies and outgoing founder and director, Monami Maulik, who took a sabbatical in 2014 to pursue a Masters degree from the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. This initiated her successful transition as founding director - a shift that includes working as a consultant for the next 6 months to help DRUM explore opportunities for growth that build on the strong track record of community organizing for a more just and inclusive society.

On behalf of all of DRUM, I also want to uplift the tremendous leadership and dedication of Monami Maulik, and charge Fahd with building on the strong legacy of this unique and powerful institution for low-income South Asian communities in NYC. Fifteen years ago, DRUM started as an idea amongst friends, and since then has grown into a powerful voice with Monami, Fahd, the entire DRUM staff, growing board and member leaders' care and cultivation.

It is an honor to be a part of an organization that is firmly committed to creating the space for South Asian immigrants, workers, and youth to lead the transformative struggles which are necessary for a more just society. I look forward to your support of DRUM in the upcoming period.

Judith LeBlanc, Chair
